If your computer is sluggish or not behaving as it once did, schedule an appointment with us! There are many reasons why computers — especially Windows computers — can slow down over time.
Too Many Programs Running
Computers have finite resources like processors, RAM and hard drives that get overwhelmed over time as new programs are installed. Aside from malware programs that infect your computer, many legitimate applications can get installed on your computer without your knowledge. As all of these applications in memory use up processing power your computer’s resources become spread too thin. Many programs also use network bandwidth which can make the internet feel sluggish as well.
Every time your computer starts Windows loads up a “registry” file that can get unnecessarily bloated over time. Programs that have been installed and uninstalled can leave traces behind. Sometimes when a program updates, it adds items to the Registry, causing problems and inefficiencies in the system. Over time the Registry can become a huge messy file, but we have programs such as cCleaner to bring it back to optimal performance.
These days new computers can be so bloated with software right out of the store that they are slow from the first day of use. Manufacturers often get paid by software developers to install demo or trial versions of their software on new machines to allow them to sell the computers at a more aggressive price. Unfortunately, programs like Norton Antivirus are memory hogs and require payment after a very short trial period. They are also sometimes difficult to uninstall. We can help you determine which software to keep and which to get rid of.
Fragmented Hard Drives
Your computer saves bits of files all over your hard drive. If your hard drive is too “fragmented,” your system will take longer to retrieve files, making your computer feel slow. In order to avoid this, defragment your hard drive or just have us do it as part of our computer tune-up service.
